Abstract IN ch. 2. I of On the Sublime the author raises the question El la-r,v vif,ovs ‘TIS ij f3a0ovs ‘TE ‘)(V ‘TJ. Russell in his edition ad loc. suggests that {3a0ov, is a complementary, not a contrary, term to vif,ovs, i.e. ‘depth ‘, which can merely be ‘sublimity ‘ seen from another viewpoint. He admits, however, that this leaves a difficulty: ‘the trouble is that, despite L ‘s rich vocabulary for this sort of thing, f3a.Bos does not appear again in the extant parts of the book, and therefore strikes a somewhat alien note ‘; and he considers that there may be textual corruption.
