Abstract

Abstract In the autumn of the year 355 a young man of 25 or 26 returned from his studies in Athens to Caesarea in Cappadocia. Following in his late father’ s footsteps, he intended to turn his extraordinary talents to a career as a rhetor. However, the initial attraction to the glamours of that profession was short-lived.
