Abstract

Abstract Captive bolt guns and firearms are used to humanely induce unconsciousness in animals being slaughtered, euthanized or depopulated. A secondary method such as pithing, exsanguination or injectable agents should be used immediately after a captive bolt stun to ensure death occurs. Using a firearm does not require a secondary method to ensure death if the proper firearm and ammunition are chosen for the species being killed. The most important considerations in using captive bolt guns and firearms are regular cleanings, maintenance and safety. Thus, this chapter focused on the mechanics of penetrating and non-penetrating captive bolt, the importance of good maintenance of stunners, correct stunner placement for different types of animals, how to prevent stunning problems, and best practices for stunning.
