Abstract
In general, patients with liver disease tolerate a normal diet. The majority of patients do not need any dietary restrictions and they may even be harmed by them. A modified eating pattern with four to seven small meals including at least one late eveningmeal rich in carbohydrate improves nitrogen economy and substrate utilisation in stable cirrhotic patients. As a general rule, oral nutrition should be aimed for primarily and, only after failure to achieve the nutritional target for the individual patient despite intensive nutritional counselling, should supplemental enteral nutrition, tube feeding, or parenteral nutrition be employed.
