Abstract

Ethnic is a scholarly discipline which has arisen at the boundary between ethnography and human ecology. However, practice is still ahead of theory in this area. And although there are already dozens of works which touch upon ethno-ecological topics, the specific term ethnic has not yet received any currency. At least half the authors of such works would be as surprised as that character in Moliere who learned that he was speaking prose, if they were to find out they were dealing with ethno-ecological questions. This applies especially to cultural anthropologists who have little knowledge of the biological sciences and are not certain what lies behind the term ecology other than the increasingly frequent exhortations to struggle against pollution of our natural environment.
