Abstract

A description is made of the basic physics and characteristics of erbium-doped fibers amplifiers (EDFA’s). The spectroscopic features and laser properties of erbium-doped silica glass are outlined first,followed by a description of the gain and saturation characteristics of infrared-pumped EDPA devices. Various theoretical models based on both accurate analytical and numerical integration methods are detailed next,with a discussion of different amplification regimes and fiber designs.
