Abstract

ABSTRACTA polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) structure is introduced to achieve an extremely thick liquid crystal (LC) layer for constructing an LC Fresnel lens operated in the millimeter wave (MMW) region. First, bulky porous polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) materials are prepared starting from an ethanol/water solution. The obtained porous PMMA is hard enough to accept the milling process to attain a precise Fresnel structure, although it even has a high porosity of more than 80%. An LC material can easily be fulfilled through the surface after the device structure is defined, and a change in the focusing property is confirmed by applying a magnetic field.
