Abstract

Fibre composites are widely used for space applications such as antennas, solar arrays and support structures for cryogenic tanks. For calculation of the mechanical behaviour of composite structures, basic material data are presented. The main mechanical properties of importance are thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, stiffness and strength. For the unidirectional data, special fibre orientations and lay ups are used to optimize the laminates, taking special requirements into account. In this paper the optimized designs of some composite parts for different space applications are shown, with special reference to aspects of the structural analysis and the tests performed to check the calculations.
