Abstract

This paper is concerned with an eccentric compression experiment on carbon steel thin walled square pipes with various a/c ratio in the short column range, supported with spherical seat. An empirical formula for calculating the eccentric compressive buckling stress σce of the carbon steel thin walld square pipes is presented as follows : σce/σcr = 1/{1+2(e/c)} where σcr = axial compressive buckling stress, e = eccentricity, c = mean distance between wall, a = length, The measurement reveals that the results calculated by this equation are in good agreement reveals that the results calculated by this equation are in good agreement with those obtained experimentally for the short column range in case of 4.1 ≥ a/c≥ 1.0 and 0.6≥2e/c≥0.
