Abstract

Abstract The balancing of electric furnace lining wear can be accomplished by the use of hot-maintenance refractories in the harsh slag-line and bank wear areas. The maintenance materials used resist severe chemical attack in the slag-line and high-temperature erosion in the banks. The design of Basic specialty products for these areas is constrained by the necessity for the products to: (1) be applied through a pneumatic gun, (2) adhere on impact with the hot wall and (3) densify within minutes after application. These limitations require that the accepted optimum refractory properties be compromised in maintenance materials.Raw materials available for formulating Basic specialty products include high-purity periclase, dead-burnt magnesite, dead-burnt dolomite and chrome ore. To these are added binders, plasticizers and sintering aids.Laboratory-determined physical property data can be related to the mineralogical structure deriving from the raw materials and additives employed, and to the chemical attack...
