Abstract

A representation of ‘Basic Ecological Concepts’ implies a thorough study of autecological, synecological and ecosystemic findings and discussions with research teams. Because of the limited time, however, I will confine myself to those whose paradigmatic consideration and methodological approach are of importance for the evaluation of urban systems. ‘Urban Ecological Systems’ would also deserve a broader treatment. Phylogenetically speaking, we have always faced the problem of bringing the environments which we have designed and shaped into harmony with our evolution-genetic inheritance and our ecological abilities. The institutions and environments which we have created are not the best ones imaginable, but only good enough to guarantee ‘living together’. For this reason I want to include extensive ecological planning concepts only where a deliberately reductionistic standpoint has to be questioned. On the other hand, I will take pains to point out new research approaches as well as gaps in research up to the present, as far as through these a better ecological evaluation of areas and modification in their use seem possible. Principally, however, I do not want to evoke the impression that everything can be planned or should be planned.
