Abstract

Received March 26, 2013; accepted without revision April 1, 2013. at a high kilovoltage setting—that is, in the 120to 140-kV range. The kilovoltage setting was high because x-ray output increases with increasing kilovoltage and the highest rate of x-ray production possible was helpful to obtain optimal image quality and minimal scanning time. In the modern era, there are some circumstances when the improved contrast at lower kilovoltage settings is helpful. The two most important situations are when imaging pediatric patients and when increasing iodine contrast, especially in perfusion imaging.
