Abstract

“Let well enough alone” should be the guide in the field of occlusal alteration. The smallest amount of correction of centric and balancing side interferences suffices when symptoms are absent. When clear symptoms such as temporomandibular joint pain are present, it may be necessary to eliminate the deflective occlusal contacts from centric relation to centric occlusion. However, such corrections must be made with an awareness of the involved dangers and only after palliative treatment and muscle therapy have been insufficient.
