Abstract

A tutorial on operating a computer to minimize hardware failure and board-level troubleshooting is presented. The benefits and risks of doing your own computer maintenance are described. The paper discusses major causes of computer failures and how to prevent them. Functional descriptions of major computer modules are provided. Troubleshooting for both operative and nonoperative systems is described. Basic troubleshooting symptom analysis, fault isolation, and board swapping are illustrated.
