Abstract

This work offers an overview on the basic aspects of gas transport in membranes. The steady-state isothermal transport through a homogeneous dense polymer film was described with the so-called solution–diffusion mechanism. Fundamental parameters in gas separation, like: solubility, diffusivity, permeability coefficient, and selectivity, were introduced. Moreover, useful common units, like: Barrer and gas permeation units, were defined. A systematic description of the different approaches used for the determination of gas permeation parameters was given. Finally the effect of temperature, pressure, gas, and polymer properties on gas transport in polymeric membranes was discussed.
