Abstract
In this chapter, the successful integration of membrane technologies in agro-food and bulk biotech industries will be reviewed. The first part of the chapter focuses on the agro-food industry and covers membrane applications in key food industries such as dairy, beverage, and food additive production and the sugar and starch industries. Further, since the food industry requires large amounts of water, the final section of this part is dedicated to water and wastewater applications in the food industry. The second part of the chapter analyzes membrane applications in the bulk biotech industry covering bulk products such as antibiotics, enzymes, organic and amino acids, vitamins, and biopolymers. In the final section of this part, the production of purified water, a key for many bulk biotech processes, and treatment of wastewater from the bulk biotech industry are discussed. Finally, an outlook for the future of membrane technologies in both industries is given.
