Abstract

This article reports the findings of an audit that was carried out following the introduction of an antenatal day assessment unit (DAU). Three main areas were examimed; clinical effectiveness, women's satisfaction with the service provided, and cost-effectivenes. The majority of women treated in the DAU during the audit period delivered at full term gestation. Sixty per cent had spontaneous vaginal delivery. Eight infants (14%) required some treatment in Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). Women reported high satisfaction with the service, which was found to be cost-effective. We conclude that many women with various complications of pregnancy can be managed in the DAU, and prefer this to inpatient treatment.
