Abstract

In this paper, we consider a novel base station (BS) activation scheme for the coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission in multi-tier CoMP-based ultra dense network (CUDN). In this proposed scheme, we introduce a new activation parameter, which is defined by using the number of associated users and the corresponding number of cooperating BSs for each of these associated users. With this new activation parameter, we recognize the BSs with higher activation priority in the network. To evaluate the performance of this proposed BS activation strategy in CUDN environment, we derive an expression for the active BS probability, and apply this probability to compute the coverage performance for CoMP transmission. Using Monte-Carlo simulations, we verify our analysis and show how the total BS density and BS activation parameter threshold affect the active BS probability and coverage probability. Comparing with an existing traffic-aware BS activation scheme (i.e., baseline scheme), we also show that the proposed BS activation scheme can achieve higher network coverage than the baseline scheme.
