Abstract

This article presents the results of a survey of social workers which examined the relationships of eight barriers to female advancement, the primary one being interest in the pursuit of an administrative career. Through path analysis, both the direct and indirect effects of numerous variables upon career interest for female non-administrators were assessed. A major conclusion was that informal support has much potential as a strategy for achieving gender parity because of its direct effects upon both perception of opportunity for advancement and the appeal of the administrative job and through its indirect effect upon career interest.
