Abstract

Proton magnetic resonance spectra of tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene dibromide were studied as a function of temperature in dimethylsulfoxide- d 6. The activation energy for interconversion of the nonequivalent methyl groups was 20.0 ± 0.3 kcal/mole and the free energy of activation was determined to be 19.2 kcal/mole. These data in conjunction with Hückel molecular orbital calculations were used to predict free energies of interconversion in the closely related tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene cation radical and in the neutral molecule of 14.2 and 9.3 kcal/mole, respectively. These predicted values are shown to be in reasonable agreement with available experimental data.
