Abstract

Of the skin’s multiple defensive functions, the formation and maintenance of an optimal permeability barrier is paramount; it is crucial for the survival of terrestrial organisms in a desiccating terrestrial environment (Elias and Wakefield, 2014). Yet, the barrier is repeatedly assaulted by a plethora of inherited (Horreau et al., 2013; Silverberg and Greenland, 2015) and environmental stressors, including mechanical insults, UV light, free radicals, and microbial pathogens (Krutmann et al., 2021), as well as extreme variations in external humidity (Augustin et al., 2019; Denda et al., 2007; Nickoloff and Naidu, 1994).
