Abstract

Barr was born on a farm near the town of Belmont, the son of William and Margaret Barr whose parents emigrated to Canada from Country Antrim, Northern Ireland. He received his early education locally and in nearby London, Ontario, where he enrolled in the combined Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) course at the University of Western Ontario in 1926. He was awarded the Gold Medal in Honours Science upon completion of the BA degree in 1930. In 1933 he obtained his MD degree and was awarded the Prize in Clinical Clerkship. During his studies, Murray Barr was active in the Osler Society, an undergraduate group with an interest in medical history, held executive posts in the Hippocratic Society, the student governing body in the Faculty of Medicine, and was president of the University Student’s Council.
