Abstract

In this chapter, the nature of barotropic tidal motions in the Gulf of Mexico is described. It is shown that the barotropic tides in the deep Gulf are predominantly diurnal because it is a quasi-resonant basin. Along the surrounding coasts, they are either principally diurnal or mixed diurnal-semidiurnal, except on the West Florida shelf, where semi-diurnal tides prevail. Nevertheless, tides are small in the Gulf compared to the North Atlantic.
