Abstract
Barium appendicitis is a very rare complication of barium meals or barium enema. A 39-old man presented to our hospital with right lower abdominal pain. Nine months earlier, he had previously been diagnosed with uncomplicated acute appendicitis and received antibiotic therapy. Barium enema was performed for diarrhea 3 days ago. The radiological findings showed that a radiopaque area in the right lower quadrant was similar to the image of barium enema. Computed tomography revealed high-density contents in the appendix and swelling of the appendiceal wall. Acute appendicitis was strongly suspected, and emergency laparoscopy was performed. Intraoperative findings showed acute phlegmonous appendicitis, and laparoscopic appendectomy was performed. Histopathological examination showed inflammatory cells infiltrating and perforation in the middle wall of the appendix.
