Abstract

Although bariatric surgery is advocated for improving glycaemic control in obese patients with type 2 diabetes, less evidence exists for its use in patients with type 2 diabetes who are overweight but not obese. In The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, John Wentworth and colleagues1 report a randomised controlled trial to identify whether laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery would improve glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes who were overweight (BMI 25–30 kg/m2). Their findings showed that multidisciplinary diabetes care in conjunction with laparoscopic adjustable band gastroplasty was better than multidisciplinary care alone for achievement of diabetes remission 2 years after randomisation (12 [52%] of 23 vs two [8%] of 25 participants; difference in proportions 0·44, 95% CI 0·17–0·71; p=0·0012).
