Abstract

In 2006 the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) limited the reimbursement of bariatric surgery to certain hospitals that were deemed centers of excellence (COE) by the American College of Surgeons or the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Previous studies examining COEs compared to non-COEs, as well as outcomes before and after CMS coverage restriction, have not shown a definite benefit from the CMS policy restriction.
