Abstract

Barge shipping provides low cost transportation of bulk-loading commodities, which holds down production costs of finished goods, and stimulates industrial and market growth. Technological advances and other improvements in equipment, operating practices, navigation of channels, and terminal operations allow the barge and towing industry to keep pace with the nation's growing transportation needs. Barge transportation continues to provide the lowest cost service for movement of bulk commodities—an average of three mills per ton-mile.
