Barge Docks for Inland Waterways

Abstract

Movement of materials on river barges has been traditionally considered to be relatively low in cost and slow. As a result, large quantities of bulk materials are moved on the rivers. The cost of facilities for the handling of bulk materials to and from barges is affected by such natural factors as river level fluctuations, river bottom conditions, and availability of natural materials. Much of the detail design of dock structures and peripheral equipment is based on empirical data acquired from a background of experience. The design and operation of barge docks is influenced by the regulation imposed by governmental agencies. The regulation, in one sense, arbitrates between river users and the affected public. The efficient operation of a dock requires a knowledge of river lore.
