Abstract

We examine the determination of shift length, employment and wages in a partial equilibrium bargaining framework. Using the Nash bargaining solution, a number of clearcut results are obtained, perhaps the most interesting of which concern the effects of changes in demand on shift length. In two of the cases examined hours worked are invariant with respect to an increase in demand, whilst in a third shift length actually falls.
