Abstract

The Second Barcelona-Boston Lung Conference was held on 23-24 January 2015, in the main auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona. Thanks to funding and logistical support from the Scientific Department of Menarini, over 200 participants attended this meeting, along with a first-class international line-up of speakers. This special edition of Archivos de Bronconeumonologia is dedicated to a summary of the lectures and the 8 oral communications from young authors, selected from over 40 papers received for consideration. Our intention here is not to repeat their messages, but rather to underline some of the issues that struck us, as the organizers of the event, as the most outstanding. First of all, we were impressed by the extensive discussion and participation generated by all the presentations. We are in no doubt that the best opportunities for learning are generated during these debates. Secondly, we were equally impressed by the fact that in this second meeting, 8 presentations were selected from a total of 43 submitted for consideration (24 Spanish and 19 Latin American); in other words, an acceptance rate of 18%. These figures alone are proof of the interest generated by this meeting and the prize on offer: funding for attendance at the ATS or the ERS, chosen by the candidate. We believe that this is a unique opportunity to offer young researchers a wonderful chance to present and discuss their work with eminent, slightly more “mature” international researchers. Furthermore, of course, the quality of all the presentations must be applauded, both those of the new generation and those of the “dinosaurs”. We hope that you agree when you read the summaries presented in this brochure, and we also encourage you to read our own “take-home message” at the end of this edition. We hope you find it interesting – we think you will. Finally, we would like to invite you to attend (and submit your best work to) the next Barcelona-Boston Lung Conference, planned for January 2016.
