Abstract
Lateral and/or adventitious root formation do not occur in lettuce seedlings germinated on glass-distilled water in air or under submergence in glass-distilled water or barbiturate solutions. Lateral and adventitious root formation occur in lettuce seedlings germinated on barbiturates in, air and in seedlings following excision of the root apex or the entire tap root. Thus, barbiturates remove apical dominance with respect to lateral and adventitious root formation in lettuce seedlings when under aerobic conditions.
