This paper analyses the changing role and geography of Japanese banks in Britain since the early 1980s. The paper demonstrates that Japanese banks have increased the size and range of their activities in Britain as a result of economic changes within both Japan and Britain. The sectoral distribution of Japanese bank lending to UK companies and residents is analysed and it is argued that Japanese banks have concentrated on lending to the subsidiaries of Japanese institutions. The paper demonstrates that most activity has been concentrated in the south of England, although it is possible that such concentration will decline.
