Abstract

The study reviews the disclosure practices of Japanese banking organisations and analyses the quality of disclosed information about the banks’ lending assets. The investigation reveals the strong and weak sides of the present disclosure regime and delivers insight into what is needed to improve bank transparency in lending activities. The study also leads to the formulation of policy lessons that banking regulators of other nations could learn from, by leveraging Japan’s experience with bank disclosure.
