Abstract

Picosecond pulse emissions at 153 μm using a microwave-modulated DFB laser with an antireflection (AR) coating on one facet and the Bragg wavelength downshifted from gain maximum are reported. Single-mode pulses of less than 20 ps were generated from the laser at multi-gigaHertz repetition rates. Bandwidth-limited pulses of 4 ps width and 0.3 W peak power were obtained after fibre compression. The pulse to pulse coherence is revealed by the modulation sidebands in the time-averaged spectrum of the laser emission.
