Abstract
The paper discusses results of the extension of the discrete-event approach to the continuous-time variables from the point of view of communication problems. The analytical formula for evaluation the mean and the maximum rate of event-based observation traffic is derived. For a time-monotonic signals the formula exactly estimates the mean observation rate if state changes are either equally or inequally spaced in the value domain. For signals that are not monotonic functions of the time the same formula evaluates the upper bound on the mean observation rate for the infinite resolution.
