Abstract

Abstract Since the advent of brass bands in the early nineteenth century, the brass band movement in Britain has always claimed a large popular following. By the end of that century it was estimated that there were some 40,000 brass bands in Britain. That number has declined considerably in this century, but the traditions of brass banding remain.
