Abstract

As a substantial and unique employer of bands and orchestras, the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago both enhanced the American musical scene of the 1890s and dramatized its complexities and divisions. At issue throughout the duration of the fair was the clash between advocates of the so-designated artistic programs presented by the Exposition Orchestra and proponents of the popular programs given by concert bands.
