Abstract

Normal photoemission spectra were recorded from Ag(1 1 0) using photons in the energy-range 11 eV ⩽ ħω ⩽ 46eV. By fitting a free-electron-like final-state band to an experimentally verified calculated band-structure, we were able to derive the initial-state band dispersion along the ΓKX( σ S) -line. Almost perfect agreement is observed with results obtained using methods for absolute k - determination. We conlcude that the free-electron approach to determine k ⊥ from normal emission data yields results of similar accuracy as the much more tedious absolute methods.
