Abstract

A new type band‐limited ELF emission burst which is closely associated with impulsive auroral hiss and auroral breakup is identified on the ground at Syowa Station (L = 6.1) in Antarctica. The ELF emissions have a center frequency of 100–350 Hz and a duration of 10–150 s, in which band‐limited structures are found in frequency‐time displays. In many cases the band‐limited structures show falling tone with time. Most of the emissions are observed at the onset of the substorm expansion phase for the limited magnetic local time of 1700–2400 MLT and in the austral winter season of June–August. The new band‐limited ELF emission burst is termed “ELF auroral roar” because it is observed with a roaring sound through an audio speaker.
