Abstract

Experiment was conducted at banana orchard under AICRP on tropical fruits, Mondouri, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, during 2010–2011 to study the infestation of banana pseudo stem weevil, Odoiporus longicollis Oliv. on banana (cv Martaman). Results showed that the pest breeds throughout the year, though activity slows down during December to February. Its damage was highest (4.5%) during September for 2010 and 4.6% for 2011. Population dynamics involving correlation studies indicated that damage exhibited a significant positive correlation with maximum temperature (r=+0.6090), average minimum temperature (+0.8691), average minimum relative humidity (r=+0.5059) and total rainfall (r=+0.4405) but negatively correlated with maximum relative humidity (−0.01936). The survey done on the incidence in six preselected blocks of Nadia, West Bengal, during June 2010 – June 2011 shows that the infestation was noticed in all the selected locations. Highest incidence of weevil was found in chakdah block (8%) in comparison to 6% in Santipur, 4% in Krishnanagar, Phulia and Ranaghat block, respectively.
