Abstract

Bamako from one republic to another Property ownership and land use are governed in a variety of ways in Bamako. A minority of registered lots has been attributed through administrative channels, whereas the majority of precarious concessions were obtained through illegal means. The number of cases of occupancy without a title deed is hard to evaluate. The recent democratization of the government has combined with the intervention of the World Bank in an attempt to regularize the real estate market. But the variety of channels - both legal and customary - through which the current situation was created gives the impression that it's here to stay.
