Abstract
SUMMARY The paper deals with Baltic collections at German libraries, and consists of three parts. In the first part, the author discusses the “special relationship” that existed between the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) and Germany over many centuries and the consequences this had on the study of the Baltic countries by German speakers, both in Germany and in the Baltic countries themselves. In the second and central part, the chief Baltic collections in Germany are introduced, including libraries in Berlin, Göttingen, Greifswald, Lüneburg, Marburg, Münster, and Munich. In this part, the German concept of Sondersammelgebiete, or special areas of collection emphasis, will be explained. In the third part, some of the special features of collecting Baltic materials today are mentioned.
