Abstract

By concentrating on risk-adjusted real return rather than total return, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) has been able to diversify its portfolios with alternative strategies, reduce its risk, and push responsibility for risk management and diversification down to its portfolio managers. OTPP’s philosophy has put it in a strong position despite the challenges presented by the demographics of its membership.
