Abstract

ABSTRACTThere are many examples, both nationally and internationally, where coastal‐defence structures have impeded the natural erosion of cliffs and have thereby reduced the geological importance of a particular site. These problems have arisen where piecemeal defence schemes have been adopted as remedial measures to protect property or infrastructure from erosion. The recent onset of ‘shore‐line management plans’ in the UK have attempted to redress this issue by reducing ‘myopic’ planning and, instead, seeking to promote more strategic thinking towards the impact of carrying out such work on the natural environment. This paper has been written to make coastal engineers aware of the importance of this topic within the ‘shoreline management plan’.
