Abstract

The nature of the shelter environment means that both infectious disease and stress are common in cats, and it can be difficult to manage both of these successfully and fulfil all the feline welfare needs. A fundamental understanding of cat behaviour and how the domestic cat has evolved is crucial, and this needs to be applied to all aspects of their care including pen design, environmental enrichment, scent continuity, handling and socialisation, as well as to feed into lay staff training.
