Abstract

Purpose: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are common injuries in active youth and are associated with an 8-fold increased risk of osteoarthritis (OA). There is consistent evidence that exercise-based activities (i.e., exercise-therapy, physical activity, and sport) are essential for musculoskeletal health, injury and OA prevention, and OA management. Unfortunately, there are deleterious psychological, social, and contextual factors associated with ACL injuries that negatively impact one’s ability to participate and fully benefit from exercise-based activities.
