Abstract

The recurrent balance of payments problems of semi-industrialized economies are appraised with a simple macroeconomic disequilibrium model. Conditions are derived for classifying a deficit as either of a ‘Classical’ or a ‘Structural’ nature. Latin American controversies about the stabilization programs put in practice since the external crisis of 1982 are revaluated.
