Abstract

Large, anaerobic, gram-negative, non-sporeforming, non-motile rods have been isolated from the feces of turkeys. These bacteria average 1 to 2.5µ in diameter and 5 to 20µ in length. They do not form hydrogen sulfide, reduce nitrate, or form appreciable catalase. They grow only in the presence of fermentable carbohydrates and related compounds, producing no visible gas, and from glucose form acetic acid, propionic acid, and dextro-lactic acid. The nameBacteroides hypermegas has been proposed for this new species.
