Abstract

Bacteriology Of The Southern Gulf Of Mexico And Yucatan Channel Area

Highlights

  • The Southern Gulf of Mexico is the location of severa1 high risk oil ports, offshore platforms, as well as an important fish and shrimp fisheries

  • This paper is concerned with the bacteriological research done on this cruise (PROGMEX 1.03.83), which was focused upon the saprophytic bacteria, specially those concerned with oil degradation

  • The most probable number technique described by Mills et al (1978) in 5-tube series was used for quantitative determinations of hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria; resulta were recorded 2 months after inoculation

Summary

INTRODUCTION

The Southern Gulf of Mexico is the location of severa high risk oil ports, offshore platforms, as well as an important fish and shrimp fisheries. An oil accident or the chronic input of pollutants by the countries which surround the wider Caribbean (Martin and Meybeck, 1976) would affect the Gulf of Mexico and specially the Yucatan, Florida and Cuba continental shelves, areas with large reefs and fisheries resources (Klima, 1976; Sánchez-Gil et al, 1981). This paper is concerned with the bacteriological research done on this cruise (PROGMEX 1.03.83), which was focused upon the saprophytic bacteria, specially those concerned with oil degradation
