Abstract

Background Data regarding bacterial pathogens from Indonesia are limited mainly due to the lack of diagnostic facilities available in the regions outside the major centres. Prof. Johannes Hospital (350 beds), the main referral hospital for Nusa Tenggara Timur province, has recently acquired an automated blood culture system and an automated bacterial identification system to assist with bacteriological culture and identification. Aims To present data regarding the number and range of specimens received for bacteriological culture and the range and antimicrobial susceptibilities of organisms identified from a regional hospital laboratory in Indonesia. Method Routine laboratory records from January 2012 to December 2013 from the bacteriology section of the clinical laboratory at Prof. Johannes Hospital in Kupang will be collated and analysed. Results Specimens collected from ward inpatients, outpatients and the emergency department will be presented. Specimens include urine, blood, wound swabs and sputum. Organisms include multi-resistant Gram negative bacilli and MRSA. Discussion Significant findings and surprising absences will be highlighted including the low volume of specimens submitted and specimen types not received or processed. The challenges, lessons learnt and future plans to improve the laboratory will be discussed.
